Summary

Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore (WEB) empowers its clients, predominately lower income women and the unemployed, to achieve financial stability through entrepreneurship.

About

In 1988, Baltimore City's newly-formed Commission for Women examined how to improve the lives of women, particularly those disproportionately affected by poverty and underemployment. They found large numbers of women possessing the will and determination to improve their lives through business ownership but lacking access to affordable business skills and coaching. At the same time, national and international studies emerged, showing microenterprise development or small business ownership to be one of the single most effective means of lifting people out of poverty. Out of the Commission's inquiry arose a dedicated band of volunteers who formed Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore in 1989, committed to: Building strong, women-owned business that lift up communities and families. WEB offers three programs designed to take aspiring entrepreneurs from initial concept to a detailed plan to business launch and even expansion.

By combining one-on-one support, intensive business training, and ongoing technical assistance, WEB has achieved success rates that exceed national averages. After three years, 71% of WEB-built business are still thriving compared to the national average of 56%.

Activities

The three WEB programs offered are entitles Small Biz 101, Right Start, and Ready to Write. They are each offered at various times throughout the year.

Small Biz 101
provides a 90 minute overview of the rewards and demands of starting and operating a small business, including the risks, time commitment, etc. Delivered to the public at no cost in communities throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area, Small Biz 101 also explains WEB's continuum of assessment, training, and coaching services as well as the admission criteria and application process for our intensive business training programs.
Right Start
is a six-week program that guides students through a structured evaluation process to decide whether business ownership fits their professional needs and personal expectations. Right Start is a good fit for individuals with little or no business experience.
Ready to Write
is a twelve-week program that takes aspiring entrepreneurs through a step-by-step process for creating and sustaining successful businesses.

Information about the application process for these programs can be found here.
