Summary
It is the Gender Rights & Equality Action Trust (GREAT) Initiative's belief that gender equality is nothing less than a fundamental right for all.
About
Every day, amazing things happen to redress gender imbalance and to improve the circumstances of women, children, and families worldwide. However, efforts are too often overshadowed by the many gaps and inequalities that still exist, and huge progress still needs to be made to realise gender equality.
The GREAT Initiative, in partnership with Femmes Africa Solidarite (www.fasngo.org), is committed to engaging with exactly these issues and to foster genuine progress.
The Gender Rights & Equality Action Trust is dedicated to amplying the voices of the unheard millions of women, lobbying to see their inclusion in political and civil society, and fundraising to support grassroots NGO's working on the ground.
While our focus starts in Africa where it is all too clear that much needs to be done to improve the lives of women at all levels, our long term goal is to campaigh for gender equality globally.
Activities
Long term, The Gender Rights & Equality Action Trust aims:
- To promote and encourage gender equality through the annual GREAT/FAS African Gender Awards.
A primary Award will be given to the African president doing most to effect gender equality over the previous 12 months in his or her country, with subsidiary awards to recognise initiatives focused towards gender imbalance across all tiers of African society (including business, human rights, conflict resolution, and on-the-ground at community level).
- To support FAS in creating the first PanAfrican Centre for Gender, Peace & Development.
The centre will be devoted to the education and training of women in particular from communities all over Africa, and with a specific focus towards gender and conflict.
- To raise awareness and funds to support other grassroots gender equality projects in Africa.
GREAT seeks to identify, instigate, and then fund projects led by African women; thus enabling them to become the major agents of change and, ultimately, to enjoy equal rights and opportunities in all aspects of society.
- To promote education as the primary agent for change in Africa, and for contributing towards gender equality in particular.
The first education-focused project they've initiated is The GREAT Initiative Schools Project.
Needs
The GREAT Initiative is actively seeking to engage businesses, corporations, other NGOs and individuals to work alongside them and support both their own initiatives and those of our partner organisations; whether this be on an ongoing basis, on a project basis or even by way of naming projects, or initiatives, or individual Awards.
