Mission
To create gender equality and empower women and their children in MENA to become active citizens of the world.
Aims
Promote policy changes and social policy development through developing platforms which support dialogue, engagement and equality throughout MENA.
Support the rights and civil liberties of women and children by disseminating information and good practice.
Activities
The Karamatuna Programme
The Karamatuna (Our Dignity) campaign seeks to spread awareness about female sex trafficking and sexual gender based violence which is a universal struggle amongst women across MENA and globally. This programme focuses most closely on the trafficking of young Iraqi women for the purposes of sexual exploitation across the Middle East.
Microfinance
SCEME, through the Future Visions Charitable Trust, supports micro finance programmes for women in the West Bank.
The Future Visions Charitable Trust has provided micro-finance interventions in the West Bank to Palestinian women who do not have access to finance. The Future Visions Charitable Trust provides micro and small loans so that Palestinian women can purchase capital items for mainly home based businesses.
Further Activities
SCEME delivers training and workshops on gender issues in the Middle East and to UK organisations working in the Middle East.
Training and workshops aim to:
- Raise awareness around the causes of trafficking, situations which make communities and countries susceptible to women’s trafficking, and the impact of women’s trafficking on communities.
- Provide the appropriate tools for empowerment to women’s groups in the Middle East
- Train staff to adopt a cultural sensitive approach when working with the Middle East
