About
N Street Village helps women achieve personal stability and make gains in their housing, income, employment, mental health, physical health, and addiction recovery.
Our excellence has been widely recognized. We are winners of the Washington Post Excellence in Nonprofit Management Award -- the first organization ever awarded on its first application, the EXCEL award for nonprofit leadership, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Heroes in the Fight Award, and the Logan Circle Community Association Award for Community Improvement. In recent years, N Street Village has attracted interest from national and international dignitaries, and has provided tours of its programs to the Dalai Lama, the Secretary of HUD, SAMHSA, officials from the Government of Kenya, and the Partnership for Public Service.
Mission Statement
N Street Village empowers homeless and low-income women to claim their highest quality of life by offering a broad spectrum of services and advocacy in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. The Village also provides affordable rental housing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.
History
N Street Village was founded in 1972 by members of Luther Place Memorial Church who saw a need to provide services for the growing homeless population in Washington, D.C. What began as sleeping mats on the floor of the church evolved into a comprehensive continuum of care for homeless and low-income women sited in a 150,000 square foot facility at 14th and N Streets, NW in the Logan Circle neighborhood of D.C. Over the past 38 years, we have assisted thousands of women by providing services that address both emergency and long-term needs.
Our Services
N Street Village provides co-located supportive services and housing for homeless and low-income women. Because many of the women we serve face multiple challenges -- homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction, and chronic health problems -- we take a holistic approach to helping each woman achieve her highest level of self-sufficiency. We also recognize the importance of community in the healing and recovery process, and we promote peer mentorship and peer leadership programs that help women feel connected and empowered. - Bethany Women's Center and Case Management
Most women first connect with our programs by visiting Bethany Women's Center, our drop-in day program, and entering Case Management. Case Management helps women pursue their housing, income, health, legal, and family goals by providing referrals, resources, advocacy, and support. Women who wish to receive intensive services from N Street Village -- such as night shelter, housing, or employment services -- must work with one of our case managers to ensure that all services are well coordinated.
N Street Village offers integrated mental health, physical health, and addiction recovery services to women. Our program offerings take a holistic approach to wellness, addressing the mind, body, and spirit. Most of our integrated health offerings are provided in our Wellness Center. We also offer a variety of arts/creative expression classes for women. We have an arts and crafts studio where women can work on personal and group projects and learn how to knit and crochet, in addition to other group activities.
N Street Village offers four shelter and housing programs for homeless and low-income women, which are co-located with the rest of our supportive services. Luther Place Night Shelter which provides temporary night shelter for up to 31 women. Recovery Housing for up to 21 women with co-occurring mental illness and addiction. Transitional Housing and Permanent Supportive Housing. We also operate Eden House, affordable apartments for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.
Our Education and Employment Center (EEC) assists women in achieving their literacy, vocational training, volunteer service, and paid employment goals. EEC provides clients with access to a computer lab, literacy training software, and tutoring services. EEC staff also helps connect clients to local programs that help women earn their GED. EEC also offers clients assistance with identifying, training for, searching for, and applying for paid employment. Staff offers regular classes on job readiness skills, interview skills, and financial management.
