Summary
MADRE works to advance women’s human rights worldwide by meeting immediate needs and building lasting solutions for communities in crisis.
About
MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of health and reproductive rights, economic development, education, combating violence against women, climate change and environmental justice, peace building and other human rights.
Since 1983, MADRE has addressed the negative impacts of US actions abroad and empowers people in the US to challenge and change destructive government policies. MADRE works toward a world in which all people enjoy the fullest range of individual and collective human rights; in which resources are shared equitably and sustainably; in which women participate effectively in all aspects of society; and in which people have a meaningful say in decisions that affect their lives.
MADRE provides resources and training to enable our sister organizations to meet these goals by addressing immediate needs in their communities and developing long-term solutions to the crises they face. They have delivered over 28 million dollars worth of support to community-based women's organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and the United States.
MEETING IMMEDIATE NEEDS
MADRE meets immediate needs through their Emergency & Disaster Relief Fund, which allows them to act immediately and effectively natural and other disasters. The Helping Hands Program provides women around the world with humanitarian aid, such as first aid supplies, medical equipment and classroom materials. Current campaigns under this program include Shoes for Haiti, which provides shoes for young women living in Haiti’s displacement camps, Harvesting Hope, which sends a shipment of organic vegetable seeds to Nicaragua to help combat malnutrition, and Back to Safety, Back to School, which provides girls escaping genital mutilation and forced marriage with feminine hygiene products and school supplies.
PARTNERING FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
By supporting sister organizations MADRE offers women capacity-building and leadership development; strengthens progressive community-based institutions; and facilitates alliances and dialogue among social movements.
MADRE ensures that community-based women are not merely present in international policymaking arenas, but that they are equipped with proficiency in the language, format and systems of the United Nations and international law.
Through leadership trainings and human rights education workshops, the women of MADRE’s sister organizations gain the skills to advocate effectively in the international arena and, once they have returned home, to hold their governments accountable to the commitments they have made at global conferences.
Activities
Unlike many international organizations, MADRE resolved not to open offices in the countries where we work. Rather than bringing in "outside experts," we support existing women's organizations, ensuring that skills and resources remain in the community for the long term. By working in partnership with MADRE, our sister organizations are able to build programs based on their own initiatives and perspectives while benefiting from the resources, training and technical support that a leading international women's human rights organization can provide.
Needs
Your monthly or quarterly gift to MADRE makes an incredible difference to women fighting for their human rights. Your stable support allows us to better plan our programs throughout the year and provide consistent support for our sister organizations.
