Girls Incorporated of Memphis provides a safe, fun, and educational environment for girls ages 6-18.
About
Girls Incorporated of Memphis provides a safe, fun, and educational environment for girls ages 6-18. Through our afterschool programs, girls have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of educational experiences and field trips including college tours in addition to the programs offered in the centers.
They are a local affiliate of a national not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote a vision of confidence and self sufficiency. For more than 60 years, the local affiliate has offered a variety of programs designed to build girls’ capacity for college preparedness, confident and responsible adulthood, economic independence, and personal fulfillment. Their programs are researched, outcome-based, age appropriate and age progressive. All of their programs are structured around six core competencies:
- Careers and Life Planning
- Culture and Heritage
- Health and Sexuality
- Leadership and Community Action
- Self-reliance and Life Skills
- Sports and Adventure
Mission
The mission of Girls Incorporated of Memphis is to provide a vision of confidence and self-sufficiency and to provide the means for making the vision a reality for girls, inspiring all girls to become Strong, Smart, and Bold.Vision: To be the premier organization that helps all girls realize their potential and exercise their rights
Activities
Girls Inc. programs are developed by their national organization and based on extensive research at the Girls Inc. National Resource Center. The programs encourage girls to master intellectual, physical and emotional challenges and to take appropriate risks. All programs are age-appropriate and delivered by trained facilitators.
In addition to the programs developed by the National Organization, Girls Inc. of Memphis developed its own The Green Life Program which helps girls understand the importance of environmental stewardship and how their actions can impact the community.
Girls Inc. also has a college prep program (Educational Talent Search, aka ETS) funded by the Department of Education that provides educational counseling in 8 Memphis City Schools. The program focuses on low income, first generation bound college students in grades 7 – 12 to help them build awareness of the importance of post secondary education and training.
The list of programs can be found here.
