Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA) partners with community-based organizations globally to uplift local solutions to issues of water, food, land, and climate change by providing women with trainings, resources, and advocacy support.
Why women? When they receive support, women are proven to be highly effective at ensuring the long-term health and stability of vulnerable communities throughout the world. In the U.N. Millennium Declaration, 191 governments agreed to “promote the empowerment of women as an effective way to combat poverty, hunger and disease, and to stimulate environmental sustainability.”
Why water, food, and land? They are leverage points for transforming larger societal trends. Communities who have access to clean water, healthy food and un-degraded land are more likely to have stable economies, human rights, access to education, health, democracy and peace.
How WEA works
- Listen and Partner: They identify underserved regions disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and climate change. They partner with respected community-based organizations focused on women and the environment. They listen for local solutions and collaboratively define where outside resources can help.
- Equip and Connect: Within these target regions, they identify instrumental women leaders and groups working at the grassroots level to protect their communities’ natural resources, livelihoods, and health. They invest in the long-term leadership development of these women through training programs, advocacy support, and seed funding.
- Educate and Activate: They create multimedia, events and other educational tools to showcase the power of grassroots solutions and to build a global a platform of awareness, connectivity, and collective action.
